Spike Lee Defends “Michael” Biopic Amid Criticism Over Omitted Allegations

Spike Lee is stepping into the Michael chat, and he’s not here for the timeline debates.

During a recent interview with CNN, Lee addressed criticism surrounding Michael, specifically the decision not to include the child sexual abuse allegations tied to Michael Jackson.

His response was simple. The film ends in 1988. The allegations didn’t surface until 1993.

To Lee, that alone should end the conversation. He pushed back on critics questioning the omission, making it clear the timeline doesn’t support the argument. In his view, people are asking the film to cover something that falls outside the story it chose to tell.

Behind the scenes, the decision wasn’t entirely creative. Reports revealed the film originally planned to explore that chapter in its third act, but legal restrictions tied to a settlement involving one of Jackson’s accusers forced a major rewrite. The ending was reworked, shifting focus toward Jackson’s relationship with his father instead. Despite the noise, the numbers are speaking.

Michael opened strong and continues to pull in audiences, already crossing $423 million globally. Whatever the debate online, fans are still showing up.

For Lee, it’s also personal, as he’s worked with Jackson, directed his videos, and documented parts of his legacy. So when he speaks on it, it’s not from a distance. It’s from experience. And from his perspective, the film told the story it set out to tell.
