Shakira just reminded the world what global reach really looks like.
The Colombian superstar hit Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach this past Saturday and drew an estimated 2 million fans for a free concert that felt anything but small. From the moment she stepped on stage, it was a full-on celebration, nearly 30 songs deep, packed with hits that have followed her career for decades.
“Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” “Waka Waka”—she ran through them like a victory lap.
At one point, Shakira paused and reflected on the moment, telling the crowd she first came to Brazil at 18 with dreams of performing for them. Now, she’s standing in front of millions. Full circle moment, for sure. The night also came with a few surprises. Anitta joined her on stage, along with Brazilian icons Maria Bethânia and Caetano Veloso, adding a local touch to an already major moment.
And while the show didn’t cost fans a dime, the city still cashed in. Officials estimate the concert could bring in around $150 million in tourism revenue, turning one night into a major economic win. Shakira now joins a growing list of women owning that Copacabana stage, following Madonna and Lady Gaga, who shut it down in the years prior.
Two million people. No tickets. That’s impact!
