Miami-Dade Police Claim Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Film ‘The Rip’ Damaged Their Reputations

Two South Florida police officers are suing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon over claims their Netflix film The Rip used too many real-life details connected to an actual Miami-Dade case.
According to the lawsuit, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeants Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana claim the action thriller damaged their personal and professional reputations by allegedly making viewers believe the film’s corrupt police characters were based on them.
The movie, released earlier this year through Affleck and Damon’s production company Artists Equity, follows a group of South Florida officers who discover millions of dollars hidden inside a home. The story was reportedly inspired by a real 2016 Miami-area drug case involving more than $21 million in seized cash.
And that connection is at the center of the lawsuit.
The officers argue the film included enough real details surrounding the original case to create confusion among friends, coworkers, and family members, even though neither officer is directly named in the movie.
The lawsuit specifically points to criminal acts shown in the film, including corruption, murder, arson, and connections to cartel activity, claiming the similarities created harmful assumptions about the officers involved in the real investigation.
Meanwhile, attorneys representing Artists Equity reportedly pushed back against the claims, arguing the film clearly included disclaimers stating it was fictionalized and did not portray real individuals.
The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan, debuted on Netflix in January and currently holds a strong audience response online following its release.
