Mary J. Blige Opens Up About a Lost JAY-Z Collaboration and a “Monster” Record the World Never Heard

Mary J. Blige has given fans countless classic moments, but one of her most intriguing collaborations may never see the light of day. During a recent appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn, the R&B icon revealed that she once recorded an unreleased track with JAY-Z—a song she describes as a “monster”—that was ultimately shelved after being leaked.
According to Blige, the energy in the studio was undeniable. The record had all the makings of something special, but an early leak changed everything. JAY-Z, feeling disrespected by the breach of trust from someone in the session, decided the song couldn’t move forward.
“It’s a monster too,” Blige shared. “[Hov] felt disrespected that someone from my session had leaked it. But maybe we can revisit it.”
The revelation reignited interest in one of Hip Hop and R&B’s most celebrated partnerships. Over the years, Mary J. Blige and JAY-Z have delivered several unforgettable collaborations, beginning with “Can’t Knock the Hustle” on Reasonable Doubt. Their creative chemistry continued on tracks like “Can’t Hide From Luv” and the Love & Life intro, as well as their joint Heart of the City Tour in 2008.
While fans may still hope the unreleased record resurfaces one day, Blige is far from slowing down. The legendary singer recently announced her first-ever Las Vegas residency, Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story, set to take place at Dolby Live inside Park MGM.
Blige describes the residency as a new chapter—one that blends music with storytelling. “It’s going to be done more theatrical,” she explained, promising a show that reflects both her journey and her evolution as an artist.
The residency kicks off May 1, with select dates through July 18, giving fans another chance to witness the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul in her element—still making history, even while holding a few secrets close.
