A judge has officially ordered a mental health evaluation for the woman accused of opening fire at Rihanna’s Los Angeles-area home earlier this year.
According to the Associated Press, Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, the Florida woman charged with attempted murder and multiple firearm-related offenses, appeared in court this week after her attorney raised concerns about her mental competency. The judge ultimately paused portions of the criminal proceedings and transferred the case to a mental health court for further evaluation.
The case stems from a March incident where prosecutors allege Ortiz drove to Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Beverly Hills property and fired more than 20 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle while the couple and their children were reportedly inside the home. Authorities say bullets struck an Airstream trailer, parts of the residence, and even the nursery area where the family’s children were located.
Thankfully, no one was injured.
Court documents reveal Rihanna reportedly told police she heard loud metallic noises before discovering bullet holes near where she and Rocky had been moments earlier. Prosecutors allege Ortiz was later arrested nearby with the rifle and ammunition still in her possession.
Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to the charges and allegedly told investigators after her arrest, “I wasn’t attempting murder.” Authorities have still not publicly identified a motive or clear connection between Ortiz and Rihanna.
If Ortiz is ultimately found mentally incompetent, reports state she could remain hospitalized for treatment until she is considered fit to stand trial.
