Fugees’ Pras Michel Begins 14-Year Federal Prison Sentence

Pras Michel, best known as a member of the legendary hip-hop group Fugees, has officially begun serving a 14-year federal prison sentence. The Grammy-winning artist surrendered to authorities on April 30, 2026, and is now in custody at Federal Correctional Institution, Safford.
Michel’s sentencing stems from a 2023 conviction on multiple federal charges, including money laundering, illegal lobbying, and campaign finance violations. Prosecutors argued that he operated as an unregistered agent for the People’s Republic of China, using funds tied to fugitive financier Low Taek Jho to influence U.S. political activities.
In a statement released on his behalf, spokesperson Erica Dumas described the moment as “a painful day” for Michel, his family, and supporters who question the fairness of the justice system. Leading up to his surrender, Michel reportedly spent time with loved ones and maintained a low profile, though he was recently spotted at a concert hosted by Kanye West in Los Angeles.
Despite the incarceration, Michel’s legal battle is far from over. His attorneys are actively appealing the conviction, particularly challenging the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) components of the case, which they argue infringed upon his rights. The appeal process is expected to be lengthy and complex.
The development marks a significant turn for the artist, who reunited with fellow Fugees members Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean for a 2023 tour before later distancing himself from the group. Michel even filed a lawsuit against Hill, which was ultimately dropped in March.
As the situation unfolds, Michel’s case continues to spark conversation at the intersection of celebrity, politics, and the justice system.
