Brooklyn-born, South Jersey–raised, and known as “The General,” DJ Alamo has spent decades spinning for legends and mentoring the next generation of artists. In this exclusive interview, he opens up about his new single “Set Me Free” featuring Freeway, his creative process, and what keeps him motivated in the music industry.
What inspired your new single “Set Me Free”?
“We were in Miami at my fam’s studio and the beat came on. The hook grabbed me—I didn’t write anything down. It just hit.”
How did the collaboration with Freeway come together?
“We did a few records in Miami, and a year later I went through my files and asked him if we could release this. He said yeah—and we decided to shoot a video too.”
The track has a message about resilience and liberation. How does that reflect your personal journey?
“It’s relevant to trials I was dealing with—removing myself from negativity and bad energy. The record really speaks to stepping away from what holds you back.”
You’ve DJed for decades and worked with legendary artists. What keeps you motivated today?
“I love music and seeing others happy enjoying themselves. No matter what we’re going through, we have to keep everyone happy. It’s one of the hardest jobs, but I was born to do this.”
How did growing up in Brooklyn and South Jersey influence your musical style?
“Brooklyn exposed me to all types of music—Spanish, island, house, R&B. Jersey was my middle ground, where I heard Philly club sounds. It helped me avoid being stuck in one box.”

“I didn’t produce it—my fam producer Rone made the beat and gave me the rights. I just picked a good one, and I think I did good on this pick.”
Why is mentoring and supporting artists so important to you?
“I was an independent artist advocate before Coalition DJs, and I love being part of what’s next. Every artist was once aspiring, and I enjoy helping them grow.”
How does being head DJ A&R for Million Dollars Worth Of Game Entertainment shape your perspective?
“I have to be open to all music. Working with this team keeps me inspired—Gillie is a genius, Wallo has incredible musical sense, and it keeps me on my toes.”
Advice for DJs and producers building longevity in the industry?
“Learn your craft, be teachable, listen first, ask questions later, and keep your ears to the streets. Talent is everywhere.”
What’s next for DJ Alamo?
“I’m putting out music, doing artist development, learning more about the business side, and releasing two new songs soon. I’m also traveling as a DJ, hosting interviews, and connecting with my Alamo ALLSTARS. Fans can also check out everything I’m working on at www.djalamo.com.”
