Courtney P. on New Single “Step”: Letting Go, Staying True, and Pushing Greatness

For Philly-bred rapper Courtney P., music is more than entertainment—it’s therapy, storytelling, and motivation wrapped into one. His latest single “Step” was born from real-life experiences and tough lessons, blending honesty with a beat that moves both body and soul.

Inspired by moments where life sent him undeniable signs, Courtney P. uses “Step” as a reminder to listen to your heart and put yourself first. “Don’t ignore the signs and always pick you first,” he says. “This song is your soundtrack—if the other person not acting right, step.”

In our exclusive conversation, Courtney P. opens up about the personal story behind “Step,” experimenting with new sounds, and why authenticity remains at the core of everything he creates. From his Philly influences to his upcoming project Real Me 2, Courtney P. is pushing greatness while staying grounded in the real.

What inspired you to write “Step” and the message behind it?

The inspiration behind step was just me putting some real life situations in perspective and I’m aware that I can make you dance or I can make you cry….

The song talks about listening to your heart—was there a personal experience that influenced this track?

Yes, sometimes I feel like we all get signs that tell us to let go of things that is not good for us..I’ll tell you one story so you can see where my head was at. It was one time me and my ex was reading the Bible together and I can’t remember exactly what verse it was but it was basically telling me to leave her alone and we both were stumped and she read it again to make sure we were reading it correctly. It was telling me to let her go lol I didn’t listen at the time and it came back and bite me

Letting go isn’t easy. What do you hope listeners take away from this single when they’re facing tough decisions in life?

Don’t ignore the signs and always pick you first. I hope this song helps people do what they already been contemplating doing anyway. Now this song is your soundtrack lol pick yourself if the other person not acting like u himbo slice “step”.

How does “Step” reflect where you are right now, both personally and musically?

Well I came up with the song while sitting on the step with the person I’m talking about lol . As far as musically this is the first time I rapped on a beat like this, but I’m always trying new things. I feel like I’m a chameleon when it comes to trying different things and styles but everything is real.

Can you walk us through your creative process when making this track?

The first thing that came to me was part of the hook. You have to listen to your heart “Step” was the first thing I kept saying to myself. I try not to rush songs like this and just let the ideas come to me. I had this beat for months before the words came to me. You can’t rush greatness!!!

Do you see “Step” as a turning point in your artistry or career?

Yes because I’m trying new things and at the end of the day this song is about letting go of the past and moving on and being the best version of yourself. I don’t know what tomorrow holds But we pushing greatness and everything is motion made!!!!

You’ve built a reputation for authenticity—how important is it for you to use your platform to spread empowering messages?

That’s a good question. I feel like me being true to myself is very important because I’m not going to be here forever. And what I leave behind I want people to be able to take it in and learn from it. I want my child to be inspired and I want everybody to live and love life. While I’m here we gonna party joke, laugh, cry whatever it is, just know it’s going to be authentic and from the heart the real me Courtney P.

Who are some artists or life influences that have shaped your sound and storytelling?

I’m from Philly so we going to start with State Property and Meek Mill. More of my favorites are the Lox and Outkast. As far as life influencers, Gillie and Wallo inspire me. Some of the best storytellers to me are Biggie, Slick Rick, Ghostface is nice too.

Beyond this single, what can fans expect next from Courtney P.? Any projects or collaborations in the works?

My next Project “Real me 2” is almost done. We have a new media company called motion made media Everything 4K and sounding crispy!!! Godspeed king about to drop “2 time loser” I’m already working on my next project. “Feet on neck season” hosted by 🤫

Looking at your journey so far, what has been your biggest challenge in the music industry—and how have you “stepped” through it?

It’s so much watered down music being put out everyday and I try not to look to the left or right of me but stay on my journey And walk a straight path with this tunnel vision that I had since a kid nobody can stop me but me and I thank the most high for keeping me around and I hope to motivate and inspire Real ones worldwide!!!!
