Mahershala Ali Leads Bassam Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Into Toronto International Film Festival

Writer-director Bassam Tariq brought his highly anticipated new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother to the Toronto International Film Festival for its world premiere, joined by stars Mahershala Ali, John Cho, Adia, Abubakr Ali, and Giancarlo Esposito.

The film centers on Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman whose carefully divided life begins to unravel as he struggles to balance his profession, his faith, and his responsibilities as a father.

When Latif’s wife dies, everything changes. Forced into a desperate journey across Houston, he fights to protect his children while confronting dangerous forces closing in around his family. At the same time, the beliefs that have guided his life begin to come under pressure, creating a deeply personal conflict between the man he has been and the father he needs to become.

Tariq’s film combines crime, family, faith, and personal identity, placing its action against the backdrop of Houston while exploring the emotional weight carried by a father trying to keep his children safe.

Ali leads an ensemble that includes John Cho, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Giancarlo Esposito, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara.

The Toronto premiere offered audiences their first opportunity to experience the film on the festival stage, with Tariq and members of the cast in attendance to introduce the project and celebrate its arrival.

For Ali, the role of Latif adds another complex character to an already acclaimed body of work, placing him in the center of a story where violence, spirituality, grief, and fatherhood collide.

Written and directed by Bassam Tariq, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is set to reach audiences with a limited theatrical release beginning September 25, before expanding to theaters everywhere in October.

With its world premiere in Toronto, the film is officially entering the next chapter of its journey—bringing together a celebrated cast, a Houston-rooted story, and Tariq’s vision for a character-driven drama about faith, family, and survival.
