Brandy Brings Her Voice to a New Generation of “A Different World”

Some television theme songs become bigger than the shows they introduce. A Different World has one of them—and now Brandy is stepping into its legacy.

The Grammy-winning R&B icon has been selected to perform a newly reimagined version of the beloved A Different World theme song for Netflix’s upcoming sequel series, which premieres September 24. Her rendition will play ahead of each episode, giving longtime fans a familiar melody with a fresh voice while introducing the song to a new generation of Hillman College students.

For Brandy, the opportunity carries a personal connection. The singer has spoken about watching A Different World growing up and remembering the feeling the series gave her. That makes her involvement feel less like a casting decision and more like a full-circle moment for an artist whose own career would eventually become intertwined with Black television history.

“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum, reflecting on how often she watched the original series.

Brandy is also joining a remarkable group of artists who have previously put their own stamp on the theme. Phoebe Snow performed the original version, followed by the legendary Aretha Franklin, whose rendition became closely associated with the series, and Boyz II Men, who performed the theme during the show’s final season.

The timing makes the moment even more significant. A Different World originally premiered in 1987 and went on to become one of the most influential Black television series of its era, using the fictional Hillman College to explore college life, relationships, identity, racism, politics, social issues, and the HBCU experience. Its influence extended far beyond comedy, with generations of viewers crediting the series with inspiring them to consider attending historically Black colleges and universities.

The Netflix sequel follows a new generation at Hillman, including Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Several familiar faces are also returning, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell, creating a bridge between the show’s original legacy and its next chapter.

Brandy’s connection to Black television makes her involvement especially fitting. After launching her music career in the 1990s, she became the star of Moesha, another landmark Black sitcom that helped define a generation. Now, decades later, she returns to that world of Black television nostalgia from a completely different position—as the voice introducing audiences to the next chapter of a cultural classic.

A Different World returns to Netflix on September 24, with Brandy’s reimagined theme song setting the tone for the journey back to Hillman College.
