Jamal Gasol and SayZee are doubling back with Smoke Wave 2, the sequel to their 2023 collab that first showcased the undeniable chemistry between the Niagara Falls and Niagara, Canada wordsmiths. With nearly two decades of familiarity and a shared mission to represent their region, the duo returned to the booth with a clearer vision, sharper pens, and a renewed sense of purpose.
According to Gasol, the new project carries “more energy, more life,” capturing a raw headspace he wasn’t in during the first installment. SayZee echoes the sentiment, describing the tape as “straight butter” with a cleaner, more polished sound. Both artists credit growth—musical and personal—for shaping the sequel’s tone. The themes dive deeper into their environments, reflecting the realities, resilience, and maturity that come with navigating their respective sides of the border.
The project’s foundation came together naturally, built on familiar producers like The Standouts, Finn, and Sonny Carson, with SayZee also behind key beats, including the introspective “Weak Hearted.” Gasol highlights “Who Was There” as a defining track, created during a period of isolation that fueled some of the tape’s most personal writing.
Only one feature appears on the album—Lord Juco—allowing the duo’s synergy to shine through. Their decision to release exclusively on Bandcamp first is intentional: a platform that lets them immediately connect with supporters and truly sell the music.
