From Oxnard to LA: Pure Order Drops Empowering Visual for ‘Premeditated

Pure Order is what happens when you bring together two wickedly talented emcees from opposite sides of the Santa Monica Mountains and let their imaginations run wild. The creative and personal partnership between Nemesis—a relentless, lyrically elevated female emcee from Los Angeles, CA—and God’s Gift—an Oxnard, CA emcee and rapper formerly associated with the Lootpack and Madlib—is grounded in a shared artistic consciousness. Their collaborative process extracts the messages lying just beneath the music, excavating the timely stories their soundscapes are meant to tell. Armed with fierce perceptiveness and relentless drive, their music reinvigorates a vision of hip hop often thought to be lost in the Golden Age— an intellectual culture and musical style created for the people, by the people, designed to unite.

Now, this untouchable duo returns to the scene with their most ambitious record yet. Each track on Sword of Infinite Sands is a distinct capsule for listeners to crack open, a garland sewn together by a desire for truth in today’s jumbled-up landscape. Vowing to live by the principles they preach and traverse the infinite, desolate terrain of the modern age with their swords at their hips, they’re poised to face today’s challenges with grace and dauntlessness, and inspire future generations to do the same.

More often than not, the word “Premeditated” conjures mental images of handcuffs and iron bars, or hands rubbing together, or sly, devilish grins. Yet here Pure Order is promoting the idea of premeditation as a technique for preparing for one’s own empowerment and success. From the first listen, audiences will immediately recognize the creeping West Coast swagger booming from their speakers. Their music is cleverly constructed to allow listeners to absorb the message while getting lost in the groove. As each emcee spits their bars with grit and conviction, it feels almost like waking from a spell listeners didn’t know they were under. In this new world that relentlessly, comfortably bombards listeners with messages that conveniently spell out exactly what to believe, how to feel, and how to live, Pure Order encourages all to elevate to a higher plane of consciousness—and free themselves from the chains of media manipulation. Everyone has the power to think for themselves. And Pure Order says: It’s about time to start.

One key ingredient is powerful enough to turn an impressive dream into reality: community. To bring their vision for the “Premeditated” Music Video film to life, Pure Order enlisted the help of local craftsmen and artisans from Teatro de las Americas, a Spanish-speaking community theater in their hometown of Oxnard. A piece of art in itself, the project came together through the steady hands and bright minds of many, all contributing their time, energy, and talent to create a mesmerizing, immersive exhibit. Everything—from the oversized picture frame to the makeup to the acting—was hand-made and thoughtfully crafted to spotlight all-too-familiar stories of life, with Nemesis and God’s Gift standing at the center of it all like statuesque beacons of ancestral wisdom, coming alive to save a humanity that has veered too far off course. For those hungry for more, the extended short film has been garnering accolades and praise at film festivals and beyond, and will be released alongside the official music video. Like prophets in motion, they move with purpose and poetry in everything they do. And as they continue to unveil this next chapter in their untamable artistry, greatness is sure to follow.

What’s the creative dynamic like between you two?

Gift: It’s real smooth because we recognize and respect what the other brings to the group. Like either one can have a concept that we discuss and prepare to write on from our individual perspectives. Then once the beat is selected Nemesis vibes off the layers and nuances of the track which sparks her creative ideas further. She then arranges the song and tells me the bar count for each verse. After we write our verses it’s a wrap. So, I’d say the initial concept conversation and then letting Nemesis do her thing are the most vital steps in our creative processes.

Nemesis: That understanding we have of each other’s power & talent provides balance that allows high free flow of creative ideas that ultimately makes for pieces we feel so deeply and passionately about & radiates off of the work, hopefully spreading the synergy we feel.

How do you challenge and support each other artistically?

Gift: As emcees, we push ourselves, but I can honestly say with no shame that I have rewritten verses after hearing the heat that Nemesis came with more than a few times.

Nemesis: On the other hand, there have been times I showed Gift my verse and he respectfully, honestly let me know I had more in me than that. And each time he said that, he was right, and I was much happier with the song after rewriting! He knows me as an artist and he knows himself as well as what our brand Pure Order stands for, so his insight and guidance on our songs is so valuable to the creative outcomes we reach.

What artists, musicians, filmmakers, and more influence your work, especially the conceptual side?

Gift: We are entertained by a lot of various artists and creatives but “influenced by” is different. I see us as if we were in our own lane.

Nemesis: Considering the pedigree of this outer realms, ahead-of-his-time, unique rap talent that is God’s Gift, I can understand his response. I also understand the other side of the question as well though. Some sounds and creatives shaped and inspired me to create music. The genius of Prince, Missy Elliott, Michael Jackson, Wu-Tang, Portishead, Bjork..shaped my feelings about sound and expression. Listening to these artists helped me resonate with my own approach to writing layered hooks that blend rap, singing, and poetry. Music is an art of life-inspired sound and all those brave ones who came before me and impacted the feelings of millions with their musical expression inspire me to walk the same path in my musical creativity.

• What does the title Sword of Infinite Sands symbolize to you? How does this title capture the soul of the new record?

The title symbolizes the resiliency it takes to march on in a moral wasteland (likened to a desert) with bandits lurking everywhere and still holding stride. Holding purpose. Holding principle. It gives the “honor of a Samurai” vibe as we also give a lil homage to the old martial arts flix most heads grew up loving.

This title presents Pure Order as the brave two that have struck out on their own despite threats of piracy from bands of marauders. And the saga develops on the album where we acquire battalions of true fellow soldier supporters attracted by the radiance of integrity as they recognize it in themselves.

The sword stands for truth. We use it to cut entanglements of lies to free ourselves and anyone around us who values living with a higher purpose.

• You collaborated with Teatro de las Americas to bring this project to life. What role does craftsmanship play in your storytelling?

Nemesis: When visualizing the film, we wanted certain shapes, colors, looks, and attitudes to come to mind, and we were able to craft what brought those visions to life. The craftsmanship of the Teatro crew produced a monumental hand-painted custom-made frame to fit our museum scene. That’s one example of how we collaborated with the artists at Teatro to craft a visual from our imagination.

Gift: What’s interesting to me is we definitely craft our lyrics and arrangements. Every word is intentional.  But then when taking it to film we craft a new interpretation of what we wrote. Being able to build with Teatro, Dirty Diggs and the other Co-directors allowed us to bring our visual concept to life.

• What’s been the response to “Premeditated” so far from your fans and listeners?

They love the “slap” and the smooth vibe. We are getting a lot of flame emojis. There is so much energy with this one. Many people have said they’re impressed by the theatrical approach to the video on such a rugged groove. I love this feedback. We’re so thankful too that listeners such as the Los Angeles Film Awards, Festigious Film Awards, and the European Music Video Awards have taken notice and made “Premeditated” a finalist for best music video! The nominations and advancement to finalists have been a bright light shining on this release. So, we felt such a sense of pride when releasing “Premeditated” to wide acceptance by the hip hop community and beyond!

• What does it mean to you to carry forward the spirit of hip hop’s Golden Age?

It means being creative, original, passionate, and purposeful. It means integrity: owning who you are and enjoying it. Play and have fun, we’re creatives! This spirit of fresh creativity expressed as it was felt by the artist was a potent force in the Golden Era that distinguished hip hop forever. We are FOREVER.

• Were there any specific moments during the creation of “Premeditated” that felt especially impactful or emotional to you?

Talking to some of the actors and seeing the enthusiasm and energy for the project, after hearing what they struggle with and how performing arts is saving their lives, was very touching and put more purpose on this project in my heart. This was a community-inclusive project that really did bring souls together who got some healing from being involved in it.

• How do you hope your music inspires the next generation of emcees and conscious creators?

We hope our music frees others from having to say and do abusive things in music out of desperation for money, likes on social media, or for anything else. We hope we show them it can be done way more creatively, and in a way that uplifts the soul instead of destroying it.

On the other hand, we also hope to expose as limited people who choose hurtful speech with ill intent. We challenge any creatives, especially emcees to be someone worth befriending in real life and rap like it. Through our movement we expect positivity to become synonymous with intelligence, integrity, and dopeness. Just as it was in hip hop’s Golden Era.
