The music world is mourning the loss of Cissy Houston, the Grammy-winning soul and gospel singer, and mother of the late Whitney Houston. Cissy Houston passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024 at the age of 91, surrounded by family in her New Jersey home, after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Houston’s career spanned over seven decades, during which she sang backup for legends such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Otis Redding. A powerful voice in her own right, she released numerous albums, won two Grammy Awards, and contributed to iconic songs like Franklin’s “Think” and Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.”
Her family described her as a woman of deep faith and unwavering dedication to her family, ministry, and community. Pat Houston, Cissy’s daughter-in-law, expressed the family’s grief, calling her the “matriarch” whose legacy will endure.
Houston’s contributions to music, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Sweet Inspirations, are timeless, leaving an indelible mark on gospel, soul, and pop music. She will be remembered not only for her stellar achievements but also for her role as a mother, mentor, and pillar of strength.
The Houston family has requested privacy as they grieve during this difficult time, and we offer our deepest condolences to the Houston family here at Tha Culture Report.
