Mike Teezy has seen just about everything throughout his life. Since being immersed in a faith-based family who devoted themselves to the church, Mike took the events of his life, whether tragic or blissful and intertwined them with his love for music. Creating songs that were not only in his style but in a way that praises God, allows him to reflect and show the world the Word he grew up with. Since then, Teezy continues to explore genres with gospel-inspired lyrics, which consistently spreads positivity and a sense of determination.
Mike has a rap anthem of self-confidence in his song “I FEEL GOOD” as he recounts his positive energy and life factors. With the Lord on his side, he recognizes his blessings from basic needs to the massive success he has gained as an artist. A line of percussion and backing vocals pair perfectly with his ability to rap and harmonize. Mike continuously gives thanks for being where he is today and carries through by showing off his personality and optimism rather than slinking into sadness and despair.
Starting in a rundown hospital bed for the “I FEEL GOOD” video directed by Will Thomas, Mike is presumed dead as he flatlines in front of distressed doctors. But, he is much more than alive as he goes into a rap and shows off his dance moves. Despite a close call to death and dangers all around him in the city, he can’t help but drop slick rhythms, causing even the doctors to dance. With vibrant colors and a choreography crew, Mike jams out but soon finds himself back without a heartbeat. A cliffhanger kicks off as a blue, illuminated leaf drops on his chest, transporting him to a nightclub while dressed head to toe in fancy attire.
What was the inspiration behind your song “I FEEL GOOD,” and how does it reflect your artistic journey so far?
The song came to me in the midst of me not feeling the best emotionally. I felt like I was on the verge of being in a depression. Instead of me allowing those feelings to fester. I remembered Romans 8:28, which says “all things are working for my good. So I began to declare “I FEEL GOOD” in spite of how I was feeling.
How do you see “I FEEL GOOD” combining elements of gospel and rap in a way that speaks to both faith and mainstream audiences?
I feel that the beat is current with the sounds of mainstream right now. As far as the Gospel audience, it’s the message of the lyrics that will resonate with them.
The message of “feeling good” is uplifting—how does this theme connect with your personal experiences or faith?
I’ve literally seen and witnessed how God has taken my worst situation and made the best out of it. So I’ve learned that, although it may not feel good right now, I can stand confident knowing I’ll make it out of whatever it is.
Can you describe your creative process while working on the song? What did you want to convey lyrically and musically?
I wanted the listeners to be encouraged. To walk with confidence declaring they’ll have a good day or feel good, in spite of how they feel.
How did you decide on the visual concept for the “I FEEL GOOD” music video, and what message do you hope the visuals convey?
When I started promoting the song on social media, I was making comedic transitional content. Videos of people falling or getting hurt, that would eventually shift to me popping up singing “I FEEL GOOD”. I wanted to expound on that concept in the music video.
The energy in both the song and video is contagious—how important is it for you to bring that joy and positivity through your music?
I feel that it’s very important. The whole point of Gospel music is to spread the Good News!
What was the collaboration like with the director and team to bring the music video’s vision to life?
The collaboration process was very easy. I was able to articulate what I saw in my head, and Director Will Thomas executed.
How does “I FEEL GOOD” represent where you want to go musically moving forward? Are you exploring similar themes in future projects?
I feel like this song definitely showcased my ability to sing and rap on the same song. So I’ll definitely continue to pair the two even more in the future.
How do you hope your listeners and viewers react to the combination of upbeat visuals and the gospel-rap message in the video?
I hope they enjoy it, and feel the joy from the video.
What was your favorite part of creating the song and the music video, and how did it all come together to create this final product?
My favorite part of the creative process was everything! From bringing in the dancers in, extras, seeing things I imagined in my head being created in real time.
