DEF MACHINE Is Back With New Single “BreakThru” feat. MOD Diggidy and DEF SQUAD

DEF MACHINE acts as the bridge between the music of yesterday and today. Through their music, listeners can travel through the way music has evolved while still being able to hold true to the classic sounds we all grew up listening to. Through DEF MACHINE, musicians and producers alike can take their raw talent of mastering the anatomy of instruments, voice, and sound to showcase true art. Their newest releases are the first look into their unreleased album that explores a wide variety of genres; in this case, a fast rap mixed with gospel elements in “Breakthru” and hard-rock rap in “Slam Dance.” They have learned from the musicians they love and admire but are now paving their own path and sound.

“Breakthru” takes listeners through a spiritual enlightenment. Feeling that a peak in life is enough of a push to get them through tough times, and taking full advantage of that moment will bring them right where they need to be. There is evil in every corner that we turn in, and seeing others commit their time to that darkness can make listeners feel distraught, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Choral backing vocals open the song to celebrate the spiritual awakening, followed by a poetic rap supported with sounds of strings and electric features. “Slam Dance” takes a turn as a different kind of high; one where people sing and dance with each other all night, with a fast-paced breakdown of words with intense drums and electric guitar.

“BreakThru” starts panning down the aisle of a grand cathedral to find MOD Diggidy standing behind the bible. Visuals of sadness, war, and the devil darken the lyrics but soon change to blue, heavenly skies, and new life as the piano and bass are played inside the holy space. “Slam Dance” has wild, colorful effects as a band plays enclosed the graffiti walls of a loud club. Extreme forms of excitement of lust perfectly match the passionate lyrics.

Can you share a bit about your journey into music?

My journey into music was deeply influenced by iconic groups like Parliament-Funkadelic and artists like Chick Corea. Bernie Worrell’s phenomenal keyboard playing especially captivated me early on, inspiring me to dive into the world of music with passion and creativity.

What inspired the fusion of gospel and rap elements in this song?

The fusion of gospel and rap in this song was inspired by the idea of breaking through life’s challenges. Everyone around me was talking about it in one way or another, and that concept really stuck with me. As the idea took root, the song began to grow both in influence and sound. Once I added the choir, it all came together perfectly.

Were there any particular challenges or breakthrough moments during the creation of both the music and the lyrics?

No “Break Thru” emerged from a specific mood I was in. I simply sat down, let the inspiration flow, and wrote the song. The sounds I chose for the production played a crucial role in shaping the overall concept behind the music.

How closely did you work with the director to translate the song’s message into visual storytelling for the music video?

Avery and I brainstormed ideas together, and once we selected the director, they brought a stunning visual aesthetic that truly amplified the song’s message. It was an exciting collaboration that seamlessly merged our creative visions.

What role do you think visual storytelling plays in enhancing the audience’s connection to your music?

I believe visual storytelling is crucial in helping the audience connect with the song’s messages. It’s like bringing a chapter from the Book of Revelation to life, depicting the end times. The imagery we chose had to be spot on to capture that essence and make a powerful impact.

What was it like working with MOD Diggidy and DEF SQUAD on this track? How did their contributions shape the final product?

Working with MOD Diggidy and DEF SQUAD THE BAND was an incredible experience. My team is fantastic, and while it can be challenging when we’re not all in the same room bouncing ideas off each other, our long history of collaboration means we sync up effortlessly. We play off each other’s strengths, bringing a dynamic energy that truly shaped the final track.

What was the conceptual inspiration behind the music video for this song?

The conceptual inspiration for the music video was to bring a chapter from the Book of Revelation to life. We aimed to capture the intensity and vivid imagery of the end times, translating it into a powerful visual narrative that enhances the song’s message.

What was the most memorable moment or scene for you during the filming of the music video?

The most memorable moment for me was seeing the final edited version of the video. We were all sitting together, watching it for the first time, and the instant it ended, we turned to each other with that look of mutual excitement, knowing we had nailed it.

What do you hope viewers will take away from experiencing your music video, both on a surface level and a deeper, more introspective level?

I hope our fans truly appreciate the immense care and effort that goes into crafting these songs. On a surface level, I want them to enjoy the visual and auditory experience, but on a deeper level, I hope they feel the passion and dedication we pour into every detail, understanding that we never take their support for granted.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

Absolutely! We’re gearing up to release our album, “America: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.” Plus, we’ve got some major surprises in store for our fans before the album drops. The anticipation is building, and the best is yet to come!
