Imark Talks New Video “Significant Half” And More

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

I have so many big musical inspirations. I can’t choose just one. Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, 50 Cent, Avril Lavigne, Sizzla, Bob Marley, Movado, Elvis Presley, Smokey Robinson, and the whole Motown.

Can you tell us a little about your upbringing? What made you want to become a musician?

My upbringing was rough growing up, I was rebellious. I always loved music. My father was a singer and my mom had DJ friends that were always around and practiced playing music in our living room. I used to help them lift their speaker boxes when they were playing at events. I wanted to be more of an MC for a sound system. It was when one of my friends encouraged me to start recording that I realized I could be a musician.

Do you feel as if there are any challenges in incorporating your heritage into this genre of music?

The challenge doesn’t really come from incorporating my heritage into the music. The challenges come from getting the music to be heard by a wider audience. Even with the heavy presence of social media now, coming from a small island getting that exposure is the challenge I am working to overcome. Music is music, it’s a universal language.

How involved is your family when it comes to writing music?

They aren’t involved in the writing process. My manager helps on rare occasions, she helped with Significant Half.

How personal is “Significant Half”? Is it about someone significant to you?

Significant Half came about by just observing certain situations of persons willing to do anything for someone they care about. It’s not about anyone significant to me.

Which aspect of the “Significant Half” music video are you the proudest of?

I would say all the parts came together well; I was just happy to see the result.

What advice would you give other artists seeking to add their heritage to pop music?

Just go for it, don’t box yourself in and create.

What can we expect next from you?

More music and versatility.
